Garden birds and hummingbirds

Minca is one of Colombia’s best-known birding spots — Colombia Travel speaks of some 300 species in the area. In Eco Point’s garden the hostel reports about 30 species seen: an approximate house count, not a scientific inventory.

A woman laughs on a wooden sofa with a tabby cat on her and two dogs beside her, under a mural of a yellow-backed oriole labelled with its scientific name.
The sofa’s real owners, under the yellow-backed oriole (Icterus chrysater) painted on the wall.

How to see them

The first hour of light is best. Watch red, tubular flowers, keep still and let the birds get used to you. Binoculars help enormously.

On the wall, too

In the lounge there’s a mural of the yellow-backed oriole labelled in Spanish, English and Latin — Icterus chrysater — painted like a field-guide plate. A good start for your own list.

With a guide?

Eco Point doesn’t advertise birding guides. For a guided outing, ask the hostel about independent local guides (see also “Birding around Minca”).
